Fence Line Clearing for Overgrown and Hard-to-Reach Properties
Fence line clearing is one of the most common jobs we handle. Brush takes over fast along property edges, and once it gets established it is hard to manage with standard equipment. GrindForce uses a forestry mulcher to cut through overgrown fence lines cleanly and efficiently, processing everything on-site so there is nothing to haul away or burn. If your fence line has been lost to brush, vines, and saplings, we can reset it.
How Fence Line Clearing Works
We run a high-flow skid-steer with a mulching head along your fence line, processing brush and trees up to approximately 8 inches in diameter at the base. The machine cuts, chips, and grinds vegetation down to ground level in a single pass. What was dense overgrowth becomes a layer of wood chips and fine material that settles back into the soil.
Before we start, we walk the line with you or review the area to identify what stays and what goes. Mature trees you want to keep are worked around carefully. We get close to the fence line. For wire fences, we work within about 6 inches and clear what the machine can safely reach without forcing contact with the wire. The operator reads each section as it comes. If a tree or stem has grown into the wire and the wire is embedded in or wrapped around the base, we work around that spot rather than push through it. Forcing the machine against embedded wire risks damaging the fence, and on wire fences, that means the kind of repair that costs more than the clearing did. The result is a substantially cleared fence line with the heavy growth removed. Spots that are genuinely locked into the wire will be worked around and left for manual follow-up if the owner wants them fully addressed.
There is no hauling involved. The mulched material stays on-site as ground cover. It reduces erosion along the fence edge and breaks down naturally over time. No dump fees, no burn piles, no debris left in piles for you to deal with later.
On some jobs with significant downed logs or heavy detached material along the fence line, root grapple service is available as an add-on. That gets quoted separately. It is not part of the standard fence line clearing scope.

Who Fence Line Clearing Is Right For
This service fits homeowners and acreage owners who have lost their property edges to years of unchecked growth. Brush and vines creep along fence lines fast. Once woody growth gets established, a string trimmer or brush hog will not keep up with it. Forestry mulching handles material that smaller equipment cannot.
It is also a practical option for property owners preparing to sell, farmers reclaiming field edges, and landowners who want their boundary lines defined again. If you have a fence line buried in overgrowth across Chicagoland or Northwest Indiana, this is a direct solution that gets it cleared and keeps it manageable going forward.
If your fence line has been overtaken specifically by buckthorn or honeysuckle, our buckthorn and invasive brush removal service addresses those species directly.
If your property also has interior paths or wooded areas that need clearing, our trail cutting service handles those routes using the same equipment.
GrindForce handles residential fence lines, larger acreage boundaries, and commercial property edges. Jobs range from a few hundred feet of overgrown line to full perimeter clearing on larger parcels. We work throughout the Chicagoland south, southwest, and west suburbs and into Northwest Indiana.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the mulching head damage my fence posts or wire?
For standard wood post or metal post fences, we keep the head clear of posts throughout the job and work carefully along the line. Wire fences require more attention. We operate within about 6 inches of the wire and clear everything we can reach safely. Where stems or trees have grown directly into the wire and become embedded, we work around those spots rather than force the machine through them. Trying to extract growth that is locked into the wire by machine is not practical and risks pulling or tearing the fence. Those areas are noted and left for the owner to address manually or by a fencing contractor if needed. The cleared result is significant, and the fence is left intact.
What happens when trees or brush grow directly into my wire fence?
This is one of the most common complications on older fence lines. When stems grow into woven wire or barbed wire over time, the wire becomes embedded in the wood and the two are effectively one structure. A mulching head cannot separate them cleanly. Forcing the machine into embedded wire risks pulling the fence out of the ground, breaking posts, or damaging the head. Our approach is to clear everything reachable within about 6 inches of the wire and work around the spots where growth and wire are locked together. The bulk of the overgrowth comes out and the fence stays intact. If those embedded spots need to be fully cleared, that requires hand tools and is outside the scope of the mulching service.
What happens to all the brush and wood after you clear it?
The forestry mulcher processes everything into wood chips and fine organic material on-site. That material is left in place along the fence line. It settles into the soil over time, reduces erosion, and helps suppress regrowth. Nothing is hauled away as part of this service.
Can you clear a fence line with trees growing through it?
Yes, as long as the trees are under approximately 8 inches in diameter at the base. Anything in that range is handled in a single pass. Larger trees that have grown up through the fence would need to come down separately before we can clear that section.
How much does fence line clearing cost?
Pricing depends on the length of the fence line, how dense the growth is, and site conditions. Most residential fence line jobs fall within a range that makes them cost-effective compared to repeated manual clearing over time. We review the job before quoting, so you know exactly what to expect. No surprises. For general pricing context by length and density, see our breakdown of what forestry mulching costs in Illinois.
