Land Clearing in Chicagoland

Got land that’s overgrown, wooded, or brushy? Grind Force does land clearing across Chicagoland using a forestry mulcher — one machine that cuts, grinds, and returns everything to the ground as mulch. No hauling. No burning. No dumpsters.

Whether you’ve got half an acre of buckthorn or five acres of mixed timber, we can clear it clean and leave the site ready for whatever comes next.

What Land Clearing With a Forestry Mulcher Actually Looks Like

Most people picture chainsaws, logging trucks, and burn piles when they think about land clearing. That’s not how we work.

We run a tracked forestry mulcher that grinds trees and brush in place — up to 8 inches in diameter. The machine chews through the material and leaves a layer of fine mulch on the ground. That mulch breaks down over time and actually improves the soil.

No debris piles. No haul-away costs. No waiting on burn permits.

What to Expect When We Clear Your Land

  • We work in passes across the property, clearing as we go
  • Trees up to 8 inches in diameter are ground down at the base — stumps are not removed, but they’re cut low
  • All brush, saplings, vines, and understory vegetation gets mulched in the same pass
  • We need at least 10 feet of working width to operate — tight spaces under 10 feet aren’t a good fit for the machine
  • The finished surface is covered in wood chip mulch — it compacts and breaks down over one to two seasons
  • Nothing leaves the site unless you want it to

Who This Is For

Land clearing with a forestry mulcher works well for a wide range of property situations:

  • Residential acreage — homeowners clearing wooded lots for pasture, lawn expansion, gardens, or outbuildings
  • Vacant and investment properties — making overgrown parcels presentable or prepping for resale
  • Agricultural land — clearing fence lines, wooded edges, and brushy corners that have gone wild
  • Development sites — initial clearing before grading or construction begins
  • Rural properties — acreage that’s gotten away from you over the years and needs a reset

If you need brush cleared, trails cut through timber, or fence lines reopened as part of a larger project, we can handle all of it in one visit. Trail cutting and fence line clearing are services we often combine with full land clearing jobs.

What We Don’t Do

A few things worth knowing before you call:

  • We do not remove stumps — they get cut low, but they stay in the ground
  • We do not haul debris off-site — everything is mulched in place
  • We cannot work in spaces narrower than 10 feet
  • Trees larger than 8 inches in diameter need to be felled separately before we come in

If you’ve got large timber mixed in, that’s a conversation worth having before we quote. We’ll tell you straight what we can handle and what needs to happen first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does land clearing cost in Chicagoland?

Price depends on acreage, brush density, terrain, and access. Light brush on flat ground runs lower per acre than dense overgrowth on a slope. We quote every job on-site. For a general idea of how forestry mulching is priced in Illinois, see our cost breakdown page.

Do I need a permit for land clearing in Illinois?

Permit requirements vary by county and municipality. Some areas require stormwater or erosion control permits for large clearing projects. We recommend checking with your local planning office before we start on larger acreage jobs.

What happens to the mulch after you’re done?

It stays. The mulch layer is typically 2 to 4 inches deep after clearing. It compacts quickly underfoot and breaks down over one to two growing seasons. Many property owners find it beneficial for erosion control and soil health.

Can you handle invasive species like buckthorn?

Yes. Buckthorn is one of the most common things we deal with in Chicagoland. We can clear it mechanically, though buckthorn often requires follow-up chemical treatment on cut stumps to prevent regrowth. See our buckthorn removal page for details on how we handle invasive brush.

How long does it take to clear an acre?

Light to medium brush on flat ground — roughly half a day per acre or less. Dense timber or steep terrain takes longer. We’ll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote.
